In a world where the role of private security is expanding rapidly, there’s an increasing need to ensure that companies in this sector operate with integrity, professionalism, and respect for human rights. That’s exactly where ICoCA – the International Code of Conduct Association – comes in.
What is ICoCA?
ICoCA is an independent, multi-stakeholder organization established to promote and ensure compliance with international standards for human rights and humanitarian law in the private security industry. It brings together private security providers, governments, and civil society organizations to advance responsible security practices globally.
Why is ICoCA Important?
Joining ICoCA isn’t just about fulfilling a formal requirement. It’s a strategic and ethical commitment that signals to clients, regulators, and the public that a company upholds transparency, accountability, and respect for human dignity.
ICoCA certification goes beyond a checkbox—it involves a rigorous process of external audits, detailed reviews of company policies and practices, and ongoing oversight to ensure standards are continuously upheld.
How Does ICoCA Certification Benefit a Company?
Builds Credibility and Trust
Being ICoCA-certified sends a powerful message: this company operates responsibly, ethically, and in line with internationally recognized best practices.
Opens New Business Opportunities
Many global corporations and institutions require or strongly prefer working with ICoCA-certified providers, making the certification a gateway to new contracts and partnerships.
Improves Internal Management Systems
The certification process includes a deep review of the company’s operations—from recruitment and training to risk management and complaint handling—leading to better efficiency and more robust systems.
Strengthens Competitive Advantage
In a competitive market, ICoCA-certified companies stand out. Clients looking for reliable, accountable, and rights-respecting security partners often look for the ICoCA seal.
How Does a Company Become ICoCA Certified?
The path to certification involves three key steps:
Internal Preparation and Gap Analysis
The company reviews its practices against one of the ICoCA-recognized standards (such as ISO 18788) and develops an action plan to fill any gaps.
External Independent Audit
A recognized certification body conducts a two-stage audit. Stage 1 is a document review and interviews with key staff. Stage 2 includes on-the-ground verification of how those systems function in practice.
Formal Application to ICoCA
Once the audit is complete, the company submits the required documents to ICoCA for review. If approved by the ICoCA Board, the company becomes officially certified.
ICoCA certification is not just a badge—it’s a meaningful demonstration of a company’s commitment to ethical, responsible, and professional security operations. For organizations aiming to lead with integrity and be recognized globally, ICoCA provides the framework, support, and credibility to make that possible.
